The Pinarello story is a magnificent one, from Giovanni Pinarello taking the Maglia Nera (Black Jersey for last place) in the 1951 Giro D’Italia to the dominance of Pinarello in the cycling world today. It truly is a fairy tale, from being left out of the 1952 Giro and taking the opportunity to open his own tiny workshop in Treviso, Italy, and from there Giovanni built the Cicli Pinarello brand from the ground up. Bit by bit the success came, and with a reputation for taking the underdogs and turning them into champions, slowly but surely Pinarello went from minnows to the giants they are today.
A mainstay in the Pinarello range for many years, the Veneto utilised their expertise in building top end race frames to construct a lower cost but still high quality frame. Often found built with a slightly heavier guage of tubing such as Columbus Aelle the Veneto was offered as a frame only option with Pinarello's usual wide choice of paint colours and finishes, and also sold as a bike with a full mid-range groupset from Shimano or Campagnolo.
This beautiful example of a Veneto is finished in classic 'Rosso Pinarello' and is built from Columbus Aelle tubing. From the end of the era of down-tube shifters, 1” forks, and steel being the material of choice, this early '90s frame represents 40 years of frame-building experience at Pinarello. In really nice condition, with a fully chromed replacement fork.
The frame's been carefully checked by one of our mechanics to confirm the alignment's correct and there's no damage to the threads. If there are any minor issues worth noting we will do so in the overview section below. Seat Tube (ctc) - we measure from the centre of the bottom bracket shell up to the centre line of the top tube to give a consistent measurement regardless of frame design (ctc means centre to centre).
Top Tube (ctc) - this is measured from the centre of the head tube to the centre of the seat tube, along the centre of the top tube.
Chainstay Length - measured from the centre of the bottom bracket shell to the centre point of the rear dropout.
Wheelbase - measured from the centre of the front fork dropout to the centre point of the rear dropout.
Front & Rear Spacing - measured from the inside of one dropout to the other. The dropouts on steel frames can be stretched or squeezed a few mm but it's always best to avoid this if possible, aluminium or carbon frames should never be stretched.
Brake Drop - measured using wheels of the relevant size for the frame, as stated in the technical info section.
Headset Threads - although it's generally recommended to match threaded parts exactly, with headsets you can technically mix and match, unless you have French or the obscure old Raleigh threads, in which case you need to stick to that type.

Quite possibly the most sought after name on the vintage cycling scene, Colnago earned the status due to the genius of it’s founder, Ernesto Colnago. From the humble beginnings in the 1950s, Colnago became the maker that everyone looked to, and the bike that every cyclist wanted to own. This is likely due to their dominance on the world racing circuit, and in no doubt due to the success of the long standing partnership with the great Eddy Merckx.
This later version Colnago Super Profil frame dates from around 1983 and is the same spec as Saronni used the year previously to win the World Championships. That frame is also known to some as the first version of the Nuovo Mexico – even Colnago seems unsure as to the exact details! Regardless of the precise model, it is a beauty and showcases why Colnago was so sought after then, and still is now. With specially crimped Columbus SL top and down tubes and crimped chainstays, all providing extra stiffness, this was a proven race-winner. In its original pearl metallic paint, this is begging for a full Campagnolo Super Record groupset and some hard miles.
If you're taking part in L'Eroica or a similar vintage event, this frame is of the correct age, so you won't be disqualified for being a rule breaker!

The Lazzaretti brothers Remo and Romolo started their bike building business in Rome in 1916. Romolo was the racer, who had some success internationally and Remo was the businessman who's accumen helped their little shop thrive. Now two shops and still selling bikes, the business did not produce a lot of handbuilt frames, though what examples there are are very nicely made and of an excellent quality.
This eye-catching mid-80s Lazzaretti frame combines some of the best technology of the time into a beautifully made frame. Built from Columbus' top-end SLX tube set and the newly released aerodynamic 'Air' fork blades and crown, this would have been a top of the range frame at the time. The green-to-yellow fade paint job contrasts with the chromed rear end and fork blades, and the frame has a number of brand pantographs, typical of high-end Italian frames of the era.

Born out of a pure passion for cycling, Oliviero Gallegati introduced Somec to the world back in 1973. When we say world, we actually mean the lucky few from the small town of Lugo in the Romagna region of Italy who had the pleasure of being the first cyclist to own these magnificent bicycles. With a name derived from the ‘Societa Meccahnica’ (Mechanic’s society), it’s no surprise that technology was at the forefront of everything that Somec produced, and over the years they became famous not only for their exquisite paint but also for what could be described as futuristic design features, such as the arched brake bridge and integrated seat collar. This kind of detail results in a rare ability to look at a Somec and know that it’s going to be a killer bike to ride, it sounds weird but we’re yet to be proven wrong.
The Air is a very special model, combining Columbus SLX with their profiled Air tubing, which is the reason it gets its name of course. One of Somec's finest frames available at the time, with wonderful cut-outs and engravings all over the place, a generous helping of chrome, alongside the trademark Somec paintwork. A real work of art.

Fanini are a true cycling family: promotors; sponsors; team owners; sales reps; manufacturers, and amongst all of this they produced some magnificent hand built bikes. Often equal parts work of art to pure performance, Fanini built bikes that showed what Italian craftsmanship and flair could achieve. Frequently sporting Campagnolo's top end groupsets and a red paintjob, Fanini were built in low numbers throughout the 70s and 80s and are now rather rare to find.
A beautifully understated 1970s lightweight road frame from Fanini, probably made with Columbus SL tubes. Finely detailed hand-cut lugs and a slotted bottom bracket were typical of the artisanal approach to frame-building at Fanini and helped keep the weight down. The metallic burgundy paint job looks to have newer decals applied over the clear coat, and aside from some marks, is in lovely usable condition.

A formidable racer in his day, Mario Vicini had a huge amount of success on the road in Italy during the 30s and 40s, as well as a second place in the Tour de France. Racing alongside Italian greats such as Cinelli, Bartali, and Coppi, Vicini was savvy enough to start his eponymous bike shop before he had retired from racing, a well-worn path for Italian professional cyclists. After he retired, the Vicini brand grew with the opening of their own factory making all types of bikes, and then in the 1960s, famed contract builder Billato started to produce the high-end road bikes carrying the name. Known for their high levels of detail with pantographed lugs, an engraved head tube badge, and eye-catching paint, the few Vicinis still around today are highly prized.
Like a lot of small-scale brands, it is often hard to know which particular model this Vicini frame is. It is likely to be one of the top models available at the time given the amount of work that was put into the frame; all lugs are pantographed, the rear brake and rear derailleur cable routing is internal, and the rear dropouts are drilled out for weight saving. Further, the frame is built from top-end Columbus SLX tubes with a custom fade paint job over a chromed rear end and fork lowers. Regardless of the model, this is a beautifully put together Billato-built frame.

South London's finest, Roberts Cycles are known the world over but have a particular cache as a classy frame-builder in the UK. Charlie Roberts honed his craft building frames post-war for various London brands, including Claud Butler and Holdsworth, but decided to strike out on his own in the 1960s. Later, his sons Chas and Geoff were passed the torch. With Charlie's passing in the late '70s, Chas took over the management of the company, and Geoff built alongside Derek Bailey, producing more and more custom road, track, pursuit, and touring frames to an increasing number of admirers. In the early '80s, Winston Vaz joined and spearheaded the production of their mountain bike frames, notably the White Spider and D.O.G.S B.O.L.L.O.X. The brand is now highly sought after by collectors.
This lightweight 1991-built frame is a lovely example of the restrained but well-made custom frames coming out of Roberts' workshop at the time. Made from Reynolds 531 Professional, Reynolds' lightest version of the 531 tube set, it was recommended for racing only due to its thin walls. As was the fashion at the time, the frame has an internally routed rear brake cable, close clearances, and a Cinelli 'spoiler' BB. We suspect the frame has had a fairly recent repaint, as it is in lovely condition with a nice contrasting black and red colour scheme.

Often referenced as one of the 'big four' best Italian constructeurs, Ugo De Rosa has an unassailed reputation in the bike world. Though he only started to build frames in 1953, by 1958 he was being asked by Italian race ace Raphael Geminiani to build him a bike to compete in the Giro d'Italia. Through the 1960s, De Rosa built many bikes for individual professional riders and started to work with the iconic Faema team. By 1969, he had become the frame-builder and personal mechanic of Gianni Motta, providing frames for the whole team. A few years later, De Rosa became the personal builder and mechanic for Eddy Merckx, a professional relationship that was to last into the 1990s. He also built for Francesco Moser, and by 1974, 80% of the bikes ridden in the Giro were built by De Rosa. When Eddy Merckx wanted to start his frame-building business, De Rosa was brought on board as a technical consultant and reportedly trained Merckx's team in Belgium.
We believe this beautiful De Rosa frame to be an early '90s Professional SLX model with internally routed rear brake cable. Though precise dates and models of De Rosa frames are hard to pin down due to the lack of serial numbers, this has all the hallmarks of the Professional and is built from Columbus SLX rifled tubing with the later-style fork crown with heart cut-out. Regardless of the model, De Rosa did not build any low-end frames, and they are all manufactured to a very high degree from the best materials. This frame is finished in a classic dark metallic blue with chrome accents; it has possibly had a repaint at some point in its life, as it is in excellent condition.

One of the best known and highly regarded contract builders of the 1980s and '90s, Gianni (or Vanni) Losa was a master craftsman. Best known for producing the highly collectable Cinelli S.C. frames and Pep Magni / ICS frames, he produced a large number of race bikes with other people's names on them. The bikes that he built with his own name on are few and far between, but are always something considered and special, often showcasing his embrace of alternative tubing shapes and styles, and with neat internally routed cables.
A highly unusual frame, this 'Giupek' team-branded Losa frame has a lot going on and is intricately built. Constructed from Columbus 'Gilco' style shaped tubing (with a Columbus Air fork) and finished in full chrome with infilled Chromovelato over the top, it is extremely eye-catching. Likely from the mid-1980s, this would have been a huge amount of work to produce and a very expensive frameset at the time. The Giupek decals are over the top of the paint finish, so they could be removed to make it slightly more subtle!

The 1990s was the decade that Pinarello truly dominated, and it was during that time that the Asolo model was introduced. At the start of the 90s there were only 3 bikes available in the Pinarello catalogue; Asolo, Treviso & Montello (the latter being the top model), but do not be tricked into thinking the Asolo was ‘entry level’. Every frame was produced to the same high standard and shared their trademark ride quality of a ‘proper’ racing bike, only the tubing used differed from model to model. The Asolos were built initially from Columbus Cromor and then Dolmen tubing, made especially for Pinarello by Dedacciai, both of which yielded only a touch heavier frames than the Columbus SL & SLX frames ridden by the Pinarello team icons such as Pedro Delgado or Giovanni Battaglin.
This Asolo we believe is from 1991, most likely built from Dedacciai Dolmen tubing, and as finely made as you would expect from one of Italy’s best builders. The black to purple horizontal fade paint is a classic Pinarello look, here matched with chrome forks and drive-side chainstay.

Though not well known outside of Switzerland, Hans Ulrich Moser's 'Moser Radsport' of Bern was the place to go for a high-end road bike in the 1970s and '80s. The frames were designed by Moser and built in Italy by contract builder Renato Negri (formerly of Pogliaghi), who was also at the time building the highly regarded Freschi and Gianni Motta frames. With wonderful attention to detail and a high-end, subtle finish, these were some of the best custom road frames available in Switzerland at the time.
Probably built in the late 1980s, this great-looking Moser frame was built in Italy by famed contract builder Renato Negri. It is likely to be made from Columbus SL tubing, with internal brake routing, fastback seat stays, and a minimal semi-sloping fork crown—it looks quick even when stood still. The pillar-box red powder coat over a fully chromed frame is in great condition and just adds to the '80s Italian go-fast look.

Ellis-Briggs were one of the longest running frame builders in the UK having been established in 1936, and although the business is slightly different frames are still being made in Shipley, West Yorkshire today. From the outset Eliis-Briggs' focus was on quality and craftsmanship, with in-house master-builders and their own enamelling set up. With a country-wide reputation for fast club bikes they sponsored a number of budding racers, with Ken Russell winning the 1952 Tour of Britain aboard one of their frames as an independent rider. Building custom bikes under their own brand name 'Favori', they began to sell their frames into the US market during the bike boom, and though the landscape changed for custom bike builders in the 80s and 90s the name still lives on.
This elegantly detailed Ellis-Briggs road frame was probably built in the late '70s or early '80s and is finished in a high-quality enamelled blue paint job with gold lug-lining. The frame is built with Reynolds 531 Professional tubing, the replacement for 531 SL and one of Reynolds' lightest tube sets at the time, resulting in a lightweight frame for the size. We suspect it has been refinished some time ago, but it is still in fine fettle and ready to be shown off at an L'Eroica-style event.

Perhaps one of the best-known of all British classic lightweight builders, Hetchins constructed their instantly recognised, elaborately lugged frames for over 60 years. Hyman Hetchins had a gramophone and cycle accessories shop in Tottenham in the 1920s, and by the 1930s, he was producing frames bearing the shop’s name. At this point, a partnership with one of his frame-builders, Jack Denny, was started, and a patent for vibrant rear stays was applied for. The curved shape of the rear stays was said to improve comfort on Britain’s rough roads; it also had the benefit of being easily distinguishable as a Hetchins-built frame, even from a distance. As well as the vibrant (or curly) rear end, Hetchins offered a huge range of frames, often with highly ornamental, heavily modified lugs, all with the option to further customise the final frame. The brand received further coverage with a successful export business into the burgeoning US market, where they are now highly collectible.
Though lacking the ornate lugs or shaped stays that other Hetchins sport, the Italia was a very finely made road frame designed to compete with the best Italian builders of the time. There were two versions of the Italia produced, with some made by a contractor in Italy from Columbus tubes, but the majority made in the Hetchins workshop from Reynolds 531. Built with shaped and filed Prugnat lugs and lightweight tubes, the frames normally featured the Italianate-style seat stay/seat tube junction and a more continental-style fork crown rather than Hetchins' twin-plate design. Like all hand-built, custom-order frames coming out of the Hetchins workshop, though, anything was possible, and there are many small variations and special features even on this supposedly simple frame.
This mid-1970s model Italia was probably built just after the shop moved to Southend, though it still sports the Tottenham address on the decals. Though less showy than some of the intricately lugged frames that were coming out of the workshop at the time, this frame still features carefully cut Prugnat lugs and a fork crown. This is a made-in-the-UK Reynolds 531 version of the Italia, which we believe still has its original paint and decals. Likely designed as a winter or training bike, the frame set has mudguard braze-ons and rear brake routing designed for a centre-pull brake.

Campagnolo Super Record drop bar brake levers (or handles if you prefer), hailing from Italy and in production during the 1970s. Made from aluminium/rubber and weighing in at 224 grams. A fine choice for keeping your vintage bike authentic, but also great for any other compatible bike.
These Super Record levers are the scarce first production type, introduced in 1973 and replaced by the more common 2nd generation levers in the mid 70s.
If you're taking part in L'Eroica or any other vintage event, these are fully compliant - so rest assured, the pre-1987 police won't lock you up for having the wrong brake levers!
The brake levers have been cleaned, checked by one of our mechanics and graded as very good condition, but do take a good look at the detailed photos so you can see the cosmetic condition before you buy.OVERVIEW

Cable Routing - non-aero means the cables come out at the top of the brake levers, meaning the cables are on show. With aero levers the cable comes out of a small hole by the handlebar, allowing the cables to be hidden under the handlebar tape.
Bar Clamp Size - this should be close to the outside diameter of your handlebars at the point the brake levers will be fitted. This will rarely present a problem with drop bars as 23.8 mm is standard, and a 24.2 mm clamp will fit just fine as they do have a little adjustment in them. There are some older sizes to watch out for but these will be noticeably different.
