Mino Denti was a great Italian racer who rode for some fantastic teams throughout the 1960s, he would probably be classed as a super-domestique these days as he was often found riding for the bigger names on his team. After his racing career ended in the late 1960s, Mino worked in the management side of professional cycling before taking the well-trodden path to starting his own bicycle business in 1979. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Mino decided he would do the building himself, and whilst there are very few Mino built frames out there, they're all beautifully finished and often sports unusual features such as hand-crimped tubes or bent seat tubes.
At just 48cm, this Mino Denti Mistral is just about as small a vintage road bike frame as you are likely to find. Built from super lightweight Columbus butted tubing and with aerodynamics in mind, it probably dates from the late 1980s. The shifter mounts are located on top of the downtube and the cables are routed into the downtube, then out again by the bottom bracket where they loop round on the outside of the frame to the derailleurs. The most interesting and unique feature here though has to be the Columbus Air flattened fork and chainstays for super aero appeal, and of course the short head tube promotes a streamlined head down/bum up position on the bike.

The brainchild of composite visionary Brent Trimble, along with former employee's of Trek and Blackburn, Kestrel was launched onto the scene in the late 1980s by Cycle Composites Inc. Beginning with a game-changing monocoque road bike that graced the front cover of magazines and was immediately raced to devestating effect in 1987, followed by the first full suspension carbon MTB (with V Brakes!) in 1988. Through the early adoption of computer aided design and aerodynamics, Kestrel can be credited with creating the genesis of the high-performance carbon road bike that is so prevalent today.
Taking eight years to design, test and prepare for manufacture the 4000 emerged as a fully formed, ready to race super bike in 1987. The first mass-produced carbon monocoque road bike available, it looked like nothing else, and importantly rode like nothing else too. The new technology that went into the building the 4000 resulted in a stiff, comfortable, light, well balanced frame, something of a first for carbon. To top it off it also had a strong aerodynamic benefit with its profiled shape and internal cable routing. As well as the cutting edge technology of the time, renowned bike designer and engineer Keith Bontrager advised on the geometry which pulled together into a phenomenal race bike.
This example of the legendary Kestrel 4000 frame was built in 1990, towards the end of the production run and is spaced for 6 or 7 speed drivetrains at the rear. With the classic Imron white paintwork in great order and very few marks, this rare machine was obviously well looked after and is ready to give many more years of service.

Though branded with Battaglin decals from the late 1980s, this appears to be a curious mix of a Bottecchia built frame with a Berma pantographed fork. The frame lugs carry the distinctive Bottecchia cut out shape, and the internal cable routing is in a style they used too, whilst the fork carries the Berma 'B' on the fork crown. The purple and neon yellow colour scheme is reminiscent of the Team Jolly Componibili colours, who rode on Battaglins in the 80s and 90s. With Campagnolo dropouts front and rear and a slotted bottom bracket this is a well made frame, regardless of its slightly confused identity!

Ciöcc bagan in the 1970s when ex-racer Giovanni Pelizzoli turned his hand to building high quality frames in Northern Italy. Pelizzoli is considered one of the greatest frame-builders of his generation and many Ciöcc were raced through the 70s and 80s. The top of the range bikes were named after successes in San Cristobel in 1977 and the 1980 Moscow Olympics (the Mockba '80) though there were no doubt many other victories on rebranded Ciöcc frames too as was the norm at the time. Pelizzoli parted company with the brand some time in the 1980s but the company continued building with the knowledge he had imparted to them and they still make bikes (albeit far different ones!) today.
Although this delightfully finished frame has none of the trademark Ciocc pantographs or engravings, the details match those of the Designer 84 model it's badged as. With a very neat black to dark purple metallic fade paint job with chromed rear triangle and fork, this is a very well put together frame. The lugs and small frame details are all in line with other Ciocc frames of the period too. Internal rear brake routing and a braze-on for the front mech date it to the mid 1980s, and it has obviously led an easy life up to now.

Benotto have an enviable race pedigree having been ridden to World Championship, one day classic and stage race victories by such legends as Francesco Moser and Freddy Maertens. Like other top Italian marques a Benotto is often instantly recognisable by the colour, the ‘Champagne’ grey finish being used for their top bikes for many years. As well as producing finely made race bikes in Italy Benotto produced frames in Mexico and were extremely popular in South America. Benotto are also well known for their shiny bar tape which was available in a wide range of colours and was extremely popular through the 70s and 80s.
Built from Oria's RANF double butted chromoly tube set (similar to Columbus SLX or TSX), this new old stock frame is ready to be built up into a period race machine or retro-mod. With classic Benotto geometry and attention to detail this is a fine example of an Italian frame of the era, with diamond shaped chainstays and internally routed rear brake cable. The model may be a 3000 but the lack of pantographed parts and a frame number make it hard to correctly identify, regardless it's rare to find a frame of this calibre still unbuilt after 30 plus years!

Shortly after winning the Giro and the Vuelta in just 48 days, Giovanni Battaglin started his eponymous bike company. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Battaglin built a small number of high quality frames for professional riders, including Stephen Roche's bikes the year he won the triple crown (two Grand Tours and the World Championships). Giovanni Battaglin is still building beautiful steel bikes by hand from his workshop in Veneto today.
Resplendent in the neon yellow and purple colours of the famous 'Jolly Club 88' team, this racy frameset screams 1980s. Built from Columbus Aelle tubing, and with Battaglin pantographed bottom bracket shell, seatstay caps and fork this could be a classic Italian race bike. The World Champion decals point to it being produced after Stephen Roche's win piloting a Battaglin in 1987.

Gazelle are perhaps most famous today for producing workhorses, the type produced in the hundreds of millions every year in Dieren, the Netherlands. Back in the 1960s however they were a much different beast. After the introduction of their 'Special Racing Division' in the 1980s, they assembled a professional cycling team sponsored by Dutch Cigar makers, Willem II. The most successful rider in the Willem II-Gazelle team was undoubtedly Rik Van Looy, but also included greats such as Harn Ottenbros & Peter Post to name just a couple. Gazelle's greatest years were yet to come, their most famous race frame, the Champion Mondial had been introduced to the world by the mid 70s and many famous partnerships followed.
Before the Champion Mondial came the Gazelle 'Race'. Lesser known due to its scarcity but by no means less important. It was this model that Rik Van Looy & Harm Ottenbros spent the latter half of the 1960s racing on. Built from Reynold's all-conquering 531 tube set with hand-cut lugs and a race-bred geometry the Race was ahead of it's time. With ample clearance and the ability to add mudguards these frames can be built into a period correct team race bike or a really practical vintage rider.
This 1968 Gazelle Race looks like it could have been a team frame, with the lack of mudguard eyelets, Zeus dropouts and the same grey colour that was used by the Willem II team at the time. Still in great condition for the age this lovely little lightweight is ready to be put together and ridden again by its lucky new owner.

This extremely eye-catching fully chromed road frameset is branded Marino, which we believe was a small bike shop in Italy. It really is a very nice frame indeed, the long tangs with cut-outs on the fork, head tube and bottom bracket lugs are the kind of subtle attention to detail only master craftsmen bother with. Probably dating from the mid to late 1980s this frame set will build into a real head turner that'll no doubt attract attention, plus it'll sparkle in the sunshine.

Trained by the legendary Albert Eisentraut, Bill Holland has been building high end steel, titanium and lately carbon frames from San Diego for nearly 50 years. Dedicating himself to building steel frames for his first 20 years, he produced quality over quantity and his frames are few and far between, especially outside of the USA. Bill began to experiment with titanium in the mid 90s and exclusively built with the material until the mid 2010s when he started to offer full custom carbon frames built by hand.
A rare find on this side of the pond, this exquisite road frame combines the expertise of two Californian legends; Bill Holland and Joe Bell. Probably from the late 80s or early 90s it sports minimal, intricate lug-work, shot-in seatstays and seamless fully sloping fork crown resulting in a sleek look. The original Joe Bell two-tone paintwork is amongst the best in the business, neon pink contrasting with a bluey-purple finish that includes the painted-to-match Silca frame pump.

Like a lot of great cyclists of his time Fausto Coppi decided in the later years of his career that he should have a bike company. He turned to Italian contract builders Fiorelli in 1954 and they agreed to build bikes with the Il Campionissimo's name on. Coppi's last year of professional racing was with the Tricofilina Coppi Team who rode on Fiorelli built, Coppi branded bikes. After Coppi died in 1960 Fiorelli continued to produce bikes for the brand, often with a similar design to those they produced with their own name on. Further success was achieved when Ole Ritter broke the hour record aboard a Fiorelli built Coppi in 1968, and production continued up until 1990 when the Fiorelli factory closed after nearly 60 years of building bikes.
This beautiful and rare Coppi Campionissimo was probably built at the start of the 1960s around the time of the might Fausto Coppi's untimely death. The fully chromed frame with 'chromovelato' varnished over panels still show signs of the world championship bands, and the badge on the fork is of the early design. Built by Fiorelli under contract these frames are very similar to those that Coppi himself rode in his last year of professional cycling. A high end and expensive bike in its time, it would have been kitted out with Campagnolo Record, Universal centre pull brakes and the finest Italian parts available. Today, especially in original condition it is a very rare and collectible frame, ready to built up back to its former glory.

Unusually Tom Crowther is perhaps not best known for the bikes bearing his own name, but rather those bearing the name of his first bicycle business, Mercian. Tom sold Mercian in 1965 and started his own shop in Solihull selling frames and parts, with frames built by, you guessed it, Mercian. Frames bearing the Tom Crowther name are now very rare indeed, as not many were produced and the company ceased trading in the early 1990s.
Beautifully refinished by Argos cycles, this blue and orange Tom Crowther road frame probably dates from the early 1970s. Built with wrap-over stays, long-point lugs and a Cinelli style sloping fork crown, the frame also has eyelets front and rear for mudguards and ample clearance for wider tyres. The frame has clearly had little use since it was re-finished and looks magnificent in the sunshine.

From humble South London beginnings Claud Butler built up a hugely successful business, equipping some famous racers and seeing his bikes ridden at World Championships and even the Olympics. In 1928 the enigmatic Butler opened his first shop in Clapham, with a further five shops being opened in just the next four years. During the period before the Second World War Claud Butler were at the forefront of the ‘lightweight’ movement and were highly regarded by club riders looking for a good quality and fast bike. The advent of war greatly affected all businesses and Claud Butler never really recovered, the post was period was one of prosperity and of increased car and television ownership – both of which made an impact on bicycle sales. Claud Butler held on until almost the end of the 1950s by which time the receivers were called in, the name was bought by Holdsworth and continued to be used for high end road machines, the brand being sold again in the late 1980s.
This beautiful original finish Buccaneer frame dates from 1955, right towards the end of the original Claud Butler ownership. This is a bronze welded ‘lugless’ frame, something of a rarity amongst British builders but popular on the continent. There is no model badge left on the frame, but we have identified it as a Buccaneer thanks to the lugless construction, brake cable braze-ons, oval fork blades and pencil stays all point to this model, as seen in the 1955 catalogue. The finish is not perfect but its wonderful to see the two tone paint and original transfers on a frame that is nearly 70 years old.

Though they built a relatively small number of frames over a long period of time, Allin Cycles have an enviable reputation as one of the finest British frame-builders. From several different premises in Whitehorse Road, Croydon, Allin cycles traded between 1919 and 1998 having first partnered with Freddie Grubb and then later the successful racer Stan Butler. Just after the second world war Allin employed master craftsman Peter Cobb to build their custom road frames and he continued until his retirement in 1980. Stan was responsible for designing most of their high end models which were in turn named after him, the company was also heavily involved in bike polo with owner Ching Allin riding for one of the best teams in the country.
Probably one of the last frames to come out of the Allin shop and possibly built by the master builder Cliff Shrub, this neat mid 80s lugged road frame is a rarity. With a racy fast back/Italianate seat cluster, lightweight Reynolds 531 Professional tubing and chromed dropouts it is clearly built to a very high standard. The original dark metallic grey paint job and water slide decals are in good useable condition and it is ready to be built up and used.

Alec Bird was a very well respected racer in his time who along with his Brother Ken took the oft-trodden path to becoming a framebuilder. Working out of Welling on the outskirts of London, Alec worked for Clive Stuart Cycles for many years and built some highly sought after frames.
Though branded Alec Bird this frameset is actually an Alan, built in Italy from bonded aluminium tubes and one of the lightest framesets available at the time. It's a Competizione model from the early to mid 1970s, with no cable guides or braze-ons, a real taste of the future, from the past!

Columbia rose from the ashes of Carlton cycles, whose closure in 1981 led to a team of newly redundant frame-builders starting their own brand in Worksop. Of those framebuilders Dave Marsh is perhaps the best known, the company did not last long and it is not clear how many bikes were produced, those that were though are of a very high quality. The frames were built in the tradition of those famous large-scale British custom builders with fine but not overly elaborate lugs, Reynolds tubing and a classic finish, often with hand-painted logos in the case of Columbia.
This mid 80s frame is really nicely put together, likely built from Reynolds 531 and is in great original condition with a sparkling metallic blue finish and hand-painted logos. Excellently executed with long point lugs, divers helmet cable stops and Campagnolo dropouts, it also has good clearance with provision for mudguards - a classic British all-rounder for someone with long legs!
